THE TUDOR AGE

The Tudor Age, if we are to be precise, ran between 22nd August 1485 and 24th March 1603, but does Life fit neatly into dates so well? Situations rise and fall, people come and go, and monarchs dither (Henry VI and Edward IV for two). Therefore, in The Tudor Age we give a foundation by looking at film of local and wider events, culture and attitudes before, during and after the ‘set’ period of 1485 to 1603. Subjects include world travel a new adventure for Mankind with discovery of the Americas, the east, north, south, and west; in fact, all points of the compass. As England was never a political island we explore other countries’ politics; in particular those of Ferdinand and Isabella of what we now call Spain, Charles V Holy Roman Emperor, Philip II and Philip III of Spain.

France with its interminable state of war with Italy, especially since 1494 when Charles VIII decided to invade Italy and dominate parts of it not that the Italians agreed with the French controlling them. What the French brought with them is another story!

England, of course, plays its part within the structure of The Tudor Age, which is governed by the actions and decision taken by the Papacy although all is not rosy when considering the effects of the Reformation. International attitudes have affected all our lives and continue to do so.

On the religious front (which we cannot avoid) we learn about Wycliff, Hus, Savonarola, Luther, Tyndale and their opponents all on film and excellently presented on large-screen.

The subject goes on forever, as does Life, and gives food for thought about current world crises brought about by past events. Why don’t you join us? Each session is designed to be free-standing although there is a theme running through them which enables your learning to develop. Like all U3A Roseland and District activity groups, attendance is free. Coffee is 50p a cup, and friendship is readily available.

There is usually a sales table at Portscatho for you to bring anything you wish to donate.
