Committee 2012 Shirley Davis What a very interesting Committee meeting we had in February! Wonderful ideas came forth and a very positive outlook. News of what was discussed will reveal itself in this and future newsletters. Watch this space if you would like to see developments as they happen, and if you would like to be an active member of this U3A please let me know. There are several one-off jobs that need carrying out like arranging a day out somewhere.
U3A News - Terry Neill The Third Age Trust magazine U3A News is changing its name to Third Age Matters‟ and will be produced five times a year, instead of four. If you would like to have this magazine delivered to your house you will need to pay £1.60 per year (to cover all five editions). A notice to this effect will be made with your reminder for renewal of membership.
Membership Renewal Terry Neill The U3A New Year starts on 1st April and we hope you will want to continue membership of U3A Roseland and District. The subscription will remain the same - £15.00 for the whole year. If you have any query please contact me on 01872 530196.
Membership Margaret Goudge 'GET OUT OF YOUR RUT IN 2012' Saga Magazine Feb 2012
I don't know how many of you see the Saga Magazine but they had a superbly inspirational article about the U3A Movement in the February issue. It's really amazing what members get up to and it all makes wonderful publicity for the U3A. So, as the new subscription year starts in April, let's get out of our rut and help to maintain, and build on, our past efforts to make the coming year a happy, successful one for us and the U3A.
Fund-Raising Terry Neill We are starting the fund raising season when it warms up in March with some car boot sales, the first in St Austell. If you have any surplus items please give me a call and set them aside. We‟ll collect them ready to sell. I hope to have somewhere for storing items in a month or so. Don‟t disregard anything: your rubbish is perhaps just what someone else is looking for. As Dr Johnson was supposed to have remarked "a man is seldom more innocently occupied than when making money". If you have some items or want to help in the sale give me a call on 01872 530196.
Day Trips Shirley Davis Long ago, in our dim and distant past, we used to have day-trips. These involved individual members organising a day out to a place which interests them and also other members; such as the Coastguard Station at Falmouth, Restormel Castle, Gwennap Pit at Carharrack, RNAS Culdrose, National Trust gardens and so forth. We have gained new members since some of these outings took place and there is no reason why there should not be a repeat performance. All it takes is for you yes, you to come forward and offer to organise one. It‟s not difficult and I will gladly give you guidance. If you have a special place of interest that you think might appeal to other members, maybe this is a chance for us to get together and perhaps have a lunch after? This is optional.
As we would all like U3A Roseland and District to move forward into the future on a bright, happy note, please will you consider taking a more active role? I look forward to hearing from you. Shirley Davis 01872 270030.
Day-School: Découpage: Three-Dimensional Paper Craft Shirley Davis A proposal is being made for day-schools in decoupage: three-dimensional paper craft (otherwise known as paper tole) to be held at Probus and Tregony. The plan is to take a Saturday in July at Probus and another in August at Tregony. The time will be 10.00 am to 3.00 pm and we will be inviting non-members as well as members. Because of the cost involved, there will be a charge but, at this very early stage in organising the event, it is not known how much that will be. Refreshments will be available. The tutor will be someone who has had many years‟ experience teaching this subject to the older person making beautiful 3-D pictures and has worked at adult education colleges locally for many years and also adult education residential colleges all over the country.
At this stage we are not asking for a commitment just an interest. There will be a minimum number of 10 and a maximum of 12 places on each occasion. Please contact me on 01872 270030 if you would like to attend. You will need careful, non-shaking hands. A materials‟ list will be sent to all those who have expressed an interest nearer the time.
ACTIVITY GROUPS
Digital Imaging Elizabeth Sharratt Second and Fourth Wednesdays in each month (14th and 28th March) The Library, Roseland Parc, Tregony 2.15 pm 4.15 pm
One or two of my group have fallen by the wayside but the rest of us, having mastered the absolute BASICS, are having fun experimenting with Adobe Elements. If you would like to join us please come to Roseland Parc Library on the second and fourth Wednesday. It would be a great help if you could bring your laptop as we only have one computer in the Library now. The second one was spirited away somewhere. Newcomers will, of course, start with the basics and then graduate to the Fun Status.
English History Shirley Davis The second Monday in each month (12th March) Probus Village Hall 10.15 am 12.30 pm
In this session we will continue finding out more about Oliver Cromwell and Charles I all on film. The effect of the English Civil Wars affects us all today so do come along and see the film. Next month we‟ll look at a full-length feature film about the conflict. The film will start at 10.15 am. Please arrive early. U3A Roseland and District Newsletter March 2012 4
Cooking Jenny Deal The second Monday in each month (12th March) Probus Village Hall 10.00 am 12 noon
There are a couple of vacancies if you would like to join this tasty‟ group!
Local History Terry Neill The third Tuesday in each month (20th March) Ringrose Room, Tregony Village Hall, Tregony 10.15 am 12 noon
The next meeting of the local history group will be in Tuesday, March 20 th at 10.15 am, at Tregony Village Hall. This session we‟ll go back in time to the period just after the Norman Conquest. We‟ll have a DVD on the Domesday Book and then look at the entries for some of the local manors. Who were the big landowners? What was the condition of the people actually farming the land? What animals did they keep? Was Cornwall different from the rest of the Kingdom?
The Tudor Age
The fourth Friday in the month (usually) (this month 30th March) Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, Portscatho 10.00 am 12.30 pm
The effect of the Internet has been colossal. Can you imagine how people felt when the printing press was developed sufficiently to produce thousands of books in a short space of time? We‟ll see films on this subject, one of them starring Stephen Fry. Please arrive early.
Shakespeare Shirley Davis The first Thursday in each month 1st March Probus Village Hall (setting up at 9.00 am) 9.45 am 12 noon
Because of the popularity of Macbeth, the play, comment was made that it would be good to get behind the scenes of what Shakespeare intended when writing it. Being as it was written in 1606, you can see clearly the Gunpowder Plot coming through, and we‟ll explore the play‟s meaning in greater depth with the use of film. As well as Shakespeare‟s version of history we‟ll look back to the real Macbeth with Tony Robinson. Please arrive early.
Knitting and Crochet Jenny Deal The second Thursday in each month (8th March) The Library, Roseland Parc, Tregony 10.00 am 12 noon
Our knitting group in February was attended by the largest number we've ever had! Ten people turned up including 2 possible new members. Any more coming along? You are very welcome.
Art Barbara Ridgway The Library, Roseland Parc, Tregony Tuesday 27th March 10.00 am 11.30 am
Please come along with pencils and some paper. We have art books, or bring any you have. There is no need to book in. Just turn up. See you there. Feel free to contact me on 01872 530781. U3A Roseland and District Newsletter March 2012 5
Patchwork and Mixed Crafts Myrna Harrison Patchwork the second and fourth Friday in each month (9th and 23rd March) Mixed Crafts - the third Friday in each month (16th March) Probus Village Hall 9.15 am 12 noon We currently meet at Probus Village Hall from about 9.15 to about noon, on the second and fourth Friday of each month for patchwork and on the third Friday for mixed crafts. Sometimes the two activities tend to merge, depending on what we need to complete etc.
Patchwork We have tried to complete at least one group project each year. Last year we designed and made a 'Clarice Cliff' type wall hanging. We also made a stained glass window hanging, waistcoats, Japanese folded patchwork and over the past two years made about 25 quillows to give to the Children‟s Hospice SW.... these are a cross between a quilt and a pillow and each child using the facilities of the hospice is given one to keep. They become a sort of comfort pillow. I am pleased to say that the last batch we made was specifically for the new Children‟s Hospice, Little Harbour, recently opened in St Austell.
Since January we have started to make a sampler, full sized quilt to donate to one of the charities connected with our troops returning from Afghanistan. Each member of the group is attempting to complete one or two 'blocks' which we shall eventually put together.
Mixed crafts During the past couple of years we have tried our hands at silk painting, felt work, making memo boards; box making etc. We are always willing to try something different. Card making is our staple.
We are very informal and our skills range from basic to extremely good. We make up the rules as we go along. Everyone is made welcome and we all share our ideas and help each other. At present we are bulging at the seams as we have about 18-19 members...luckily not everyone turns up at the same time. However we will try to fit in anyone who is interested...we will just squeeze up a bit !!!
Book Club Maureen Goff The third Wednesday in the month (21st March) 2.00 pm 4.00 pm Roseland Parc, Tregony
The next meeting of the Book Club will be on the third Wednesday in the month as usual. We‟ll meet on Wednesday 21 st March in Roseland Parc at 2.00 pm, when Maureen will be presiding, refreshed from her break. The book we are currently reading is "Wedlock" by Wendy Moore. The last book we covered was "The Kashmir Shawl" by Rosie Thomas which was extremely popular and received favourable reviews from everyone. New members are always welcome.
Monthly Meetings - Shirley Davis
For the past few months we have held two general meetings a month and the system has taken place on a trial basis (like all activity groups). However, the cost of speakers and low attendance at these meetings does not warrant the expenditure, especially as fund-raising is depleted. Therefore, from June the monthly meetings will revert to being alternate between Probus and Portscatho.
Setting up is from 9.30 am. Coffee and chat is from 10.00 am, and the speaker will start at 10.30 am for about an hour.
Tuesday 6th March . Probus Village Hall Coffee and chat 10.00 am 10.30 am Speaker: Alan Cox: Chelsea Flower Show and a Trip down the River Thames
Monday 19 th March Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, Portscatho Coffee and chat 10.00 am 10.30 am Speaker: Lesley Robinson (Lesley‟s third visit): Queen Elizabeth‟s costumes

Monday 16th April Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, Portscatho. Coffee and chat 10.00 am 10.30 am Speaker: David Pollard - "Trevithick"
From June, the monthly meetings will revert to being held in alternative venues: Probus Village Hall the first Tuesday in each month May, July, September, November, January, March

Thursday Pub Lunch Janet Axworthy The last Thursday in the month (29th March) Meet 12 noon for 12.30 pm
The Polgooth Inn, Polgooth, near St Austell
As Co-ordinator of the Thursday Pub Lunch date every month, I would like to invite all members and, in particular, anyone who has recently joined our ranks to come along to this monthly event. It is an excellent chance to meet up with other members whilst enjoying a good meal. This month Mike Windless has very kindly offered to arrange a lunch at one of his favourite pubs and that is The Polgooth Inn at Polgooth on Thursday 29th March at 12.00 for 12.30 p.m. and to book your place and for directions please ring Mike on 01726 883717. Do come along - you will be made very welcome. If you have a favourite pub and would like to take members there then I shall be looking for someone to organise the pub lunch for May - you only need to book a table and then allow your telephone number to be published in the monthly newsletter.
