Leader: Peter Gane.              01872 501820               Email

Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall 12 noon to 1.00 p.m. - 2nd Wednesday of the month (after Local Interest)

We hold a monthly 'clinic' session where all members are welcome to ask questions or seek advice about any aspect of family history research including information sources, record keeping or help with tracing a particular ancestor.

We aren't only looking at Cornish families so it doesn't matter which part of the country your family roots are in.

You can access our Resources section containing information and links to other research sources by clicking here.

I am happy to give advice or assistance at any time if members call or email me.

History Through The Arts

Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall  10.00 a.m. to 12 noon

From 2010, the frequency will alter to the fourth Friday in each month

22nd January

26th February

26th March onward

This group started in October by examining early painters, such as Cimabue, Giotto and Duccio, and how art developed from the Byzantine style to the ‘modern’ Western art form.

Following on from these early exponents of visual art, we are exploring the effects of The Black Death uponEurope, reflecting how Man’s representation of himself and his world had been affected by such a cataclysmic event. Each session up to March will follow a similar theme:

Agricultural changes in England from 1066 to the 16th century.

Art in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Black Death, including possible diagnoses of what it really was and why some people were not affected by it.

The Great Plague of 1665 and how Londoners were treated and reacted.

You do not need any previous knowledge to enjoy these sessions as professionally-made film will reveal everything to you.

Shakespeare's World

Leader: Shirley Davis                01872 270030             Email

Probus Vilage Hall, Probus

9.45 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. (Arrive any time after 9.00 a.m.)

Step back in time to Elizabethan and Jacobean England with William Shakespeare.

This study group involves watching BBC produced film of individual plays so that you gain a broad spectrum of Shakespeare’s range of talent through “tragedy, comedy, history, pastoral, pastoral-comical, historical-pastoral, tragical-historical, tragical-comical-historical-pastoral, scene indivadable or poem unlimited”, as Polonius would say.

Having enjoyed a successful early season with Shakespeare plays we will continue with the following, straight through (with a break for coffee).

You do not need to have any knowledge of Shakespeare or the times in which he lived, nor understand the language as sub-titles help by allowing you to read the words as well as hear and see the action. In fact, you might be surprised to discover how many ‘modern’ words and phrases were actually created by Shakespeare.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the sessions will be sporadic after January until further notice. It is hoped they will resume regularly after August.

26th October

All's Well That Ends Well

9th November

Much Ado About Nothing

11th January Julius Caesar

Traveller's Tales

Leader: Malcolm Craven             01872 501731

Next: Tuesday 8th March from 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon at Probus Village Hall South America

We're all familiar with booking package holidays from a brochure, but if you want to really explore a country, packages don't always give you the freedom to go everywhere and see everything you want to.

This short series of presentations will show you the advantages and potential pitfalls of becoming an independent traveller and making all your own arrangements rather than accepting a tour company's ideas on a standard package.

Malcolm has made trips to a wide variety of destinations on all continents, working out his own itineraries, and arranging flights, hotels and internal transport by road, rail and water.  He will explain what you need to know and look out for, and use his own photographs to illustrate some of the journeys he has made in the past 5 years.

Future dates, all at Probus Village Hall from 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon:

Monday 8th March

Monday 12th April

Monday 14th June

Monday 12th July
