Since only a few members are actively researching their ancestry, we are not holding regular meetings on the subject. However, all members are welcome to contact me to ask questions or seek advice about any aspect of family history research including information sources, record keeping or help with tracing a particular ancestor. For those starting out for the first time, I'm happy to meet by arrangement, usually after the Local Interest meeting at Portscatho on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. We aren't only looking at Cornish families so it doesn't matter which part of the country your family roots are in. You can also access our Resources section containing information and links to other research sources by clicking here. Leader: Ann Smith 01726 843449 Roseland Parc, Tregony 10.30 a.m. to 12 nooon - 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Note - there will only be one meeting in July, on the 13th, and the group will take a break in August, resuming from September.
Whether you only have basic French remembered from your schooldays, or a reasonable working knowledge of the language, this activity will give you an opportunity to practice and develop your conversational skills. Working in small groups, with others at a similar level, but with help on hand when neeed, each session will focus on different situations you would encounter when visiting France. As with all of our activities, the aim is to make the experience enjoyable for all members taking part, in a relaxed atmosphere with like minded people. From 2010, the frequency will alter to the fourth Friday in each month 22nd January 26th February 26th March onward This
group started in October by examining early painters, such as Cimabue, Giotto
and Duccio, and how art developed from the Byzantine style to the ‘modern’
Western art form. Following
on from these early exponents of visual art, we are exploring the effects of
The Black Death upon Agricultural changes in England from 1066 to the 16th century. Art
in the 13th and 14th centuries. The
Black Death, including possible diagnoses of what it really was and why some
people were not affected by it. The
Great Plague of 1665 and how Londoners were treated and reacted. You
do not need any previous knowledge to enjoy these sessions as professionally-made
film will reveal everything to you. Leader: Jenny Deal 01872 530308 Email Roseland Parc, Tregony 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon - 2nd Thursday of the month. Co-ordinator: Shirley Davis 01872 270030 Email Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, Portscatho. 10.00 am – 12 noon 2nd Wednesday of the month. Step back in time to Elizabethan and Jacobean England with William Shakespeare. This study group involves watching BBC produced film of individual plays so that you gain a broad spectrum of Shakespeare’s range of talent through “tragedy, comedy, history, pastoral, pastoral-comical, historical-pastoral, tragical-historical, tragical-comical-historical-pastoral, scene indivadable or poem unlimited”, as Polonius would say. Having enjoyed a successful early season with Shakespeare plays we will continue with the following, straight through (with a break for coffee). You do not need to have any knowledge of Shakespeare or the times in which he lived, nor understand the language as sub-titles help by allowing you to read the words as well as hear and see the action. In fact, you might be surprised to discover how many ‘modern’ words and phrases were actually created by Shakespeare. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the sessions will be sporadic after January until further notice. It is hoped they will resume regularly after August.
